Spring Quarter Registration

Registration for Spring Quarter is coming soon. All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not admitted to a major will be seeking to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their appointment time in order to remove their "Faculty Advisor Hold." Spring registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Monday, February 13. Spring registration for graduate students begins Monday, February 27. Help Your Students Graduate on Time

Faculty and staff who advise students can now encourage students to visit and use SPU's new retention site, On Track: Degree Planner. This site details the steps students must take each year to stay on course to graduate on time. You're encouraged to reference the site when advising students, using the list of tasks for their academic year as a guide for their progress. More




Staff Payroll Change?

Marston Lecture on Feb. 7

What is beauty? This year's Marston Lecture will address the question with ideas proposed by Plato in the Hippias Major, and examine them in light of other philosophers and theologians, art and architecture, and recent research in psychology. C. May Marston Assistant Professor of Classics Owen Ewald will give the Marston Lecture on Tuesday, February 7, 2 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. His topic is “Real Beauty in Plato? Sifting the Hippias Major." More




Jazz Ensemble Concert Feb. 7

The Jazz Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, in the E.E. Bach Theater inside SPU's McKinley Hall. The event is free and wheelchair accessible.




Discussing Race and Ethnicity

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in Winter Quarter's [In Context] Discussion Series, sponsored by ASSP Intercultural Director Cristina Hernandez. One of the goals of [In Context] is to create a place for participants to openly and honestly discuss difficult issues concerning race and ethnicity. It's an opportunity to learn and gain confidence and experience discussing these issues. The topics this quarter are “The Deconstruction of Race" and “White Privilege: The What and Why of the Bridges ‘Born Identity' Exhibit." Both are on Thursdays, 9-10:20 a.m., February 2–March 8. An educational forum titled “Demographics: Faces of Homelessness" will be held Thursday, February 2, 1-2 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall 109. The forum is part of the activities surrounding the visit of Tent City 3. More

Now Showing at the Art Center Gallery

SPU's Art Center Gallery currently features an “otherworldly" installation of 3-D images and time-based media by adjunct art faculty member Kayo Nakamura. The exhibit runs until February 17. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. More




Thursday Food for Thought: Jeffrey Overstreet

University Communications Specialist Jeffrey Overstreet considers 2011's most popular, and most overlooked, films at this week's “Thursday Food for Thought" on February 2 at 12:30 p.m. in the Library Reading Room. Are the Academy's “Best Picture" nominees really the best films of 2011? Or just the most popular? Jeffrey, a film reviewer and novelist, will take a look at themes and artistry in the movies nominated for “Best Picture" at the Oscars. He will also recommend several significant films that the Oscars overlooked. More

Sawers Presents Paper

Kimberly Sawers, associate professor of accounting, presented a paper titled “An experimental examination of perceptions of fairness on transfer pricing decisions and firm profit" at the 2012 American Accounting Association Management Accounting Section (MAS) Conference in Houston, Texas, in January. In addition, Kim served as a discussant on another paper at the MAS conference.
