Thursday Food for Thought Survey

The library staff is considering ways of improving “Thursday Food for Thought," its SPU faculty and staff author readings. They would like to hear from you. If you haven't already taken it, please consider responding to this brief, five-question online survey before July 10. By taking the survey, you will be entered into a random drawing for one of five $5 Starbucks gift cards. More




University Communications Closed July 9-11

The Office of University Communications will be closed for its annual in-house organization and planning time, July 9-12. Although the office is closed, the UC staff will be on site and available in emergencies. In the case of an emergency, call Office Manager Julia Weir at 206-281-2051, and she will connect you with the appropriate staff member. If you are currently working with UC on a project, your communications specialist will ensure that the closure does not cause any delays. Thank you for helping us prepare for a new academic year.




SFS Closed August 1

Student Financial Services will be closed on Wednesday, August 1, for their annual summer office retreat. The office will re-open on Thursday, August 2. If you have any questions, call 206-281-2061.

Follow the Summer SPRINT Teams

This summer, more than 40 SPU students will learn and serve in communities around the globe as they participate in a SPRINT trip. Students will be in Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, and Vietnam. SPRINT participants will step out of their comfort zones, experience and encounter God, learn from the faith and example of others, and engage in models of reconciliation and community development that demonstrate the wholeness of the Gospel. Summer Cleaning in Your Office? Don't Forget the SPU Archives.

Doing some summer cleaning in your office? The SPU Archives wants your materials! If you have any items that show the history of the university or your department's part in it, please consider sending those items to the archives. Examples of archival materials include (but aren't limited to): department meeting minutes and agendas; department publications; photographs and memorabilia. If you have something to donate, or have any questions, contact University Archivist Adrienne Meier at ameier@spu.edu or 206-281-2422.




Mailing Services on Summer Schedule

Mailing and Copying Services is now on its summer hours schedule. There will be one mail delivery and pickup time in the afternoon. The office is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. If you will be out of the office for an extended period of time, let Mailing Services know so that they can hold your mail for you until your return. If you have any questions or concerns, call 206-281-2077.




Important Information About Flex Spending Benefits Cards

Our flexible spending administrator, BAC, provided new information for those who currently hold Benefits cards. If you have a Benefits card for health care flexible spending accounts related to the year 2011-12, and if you did not elect new funds for the 2012-13 planning year, your Benefits card will remain active until the end of the grace period (8/31/2012). If, however, you did elect new funds, your reimbursable purchases made on the card between 7/1/12 and 8/31/2012 will be deducted first from any balance you might have remaining from your 2011-12 planning year, and then from your 2012-13 new election. Copeland Presents Session, Honored by Alma Mater

Raedene Copeland, assistant professor of family and consumer sciences, presented a session titled “Transforming Students Into Corporate Leaders Through Tri-Dimensional Learning Strategies" at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Also, Raedene was recently awarded the prestigious honor of being selected one of “Inaugural 40 under 40" by her alma mater, North Carolina Central University. Congratulations, Raedene!




Kato Gives Presentation

Sharleen Kato, professor of family and consumer sciences, gave a presentation on “Living Our Mission" at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. She also served as a Washington state senator for the conference, Washington Association of Family and Consumer Sciences president, and national membership committee member.




Hanson Conducts Mahler Festival

Professor of Music Eric Hanson recently conducted a special reading of Mahler's “Fifth Symphony" for the Northwest Mahler Festival at St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle.




Overstreet Re-Launches Blog, Review Published

After almost a decade of self-publishing Looking Closer — a blog about arts and faith — University Communications Specialist Jeffrey Overstreet re-launched his blog on July 1 at Patheos.com, after their invitation to become one of their featured bloggers. Also, Jeffrey's review of the book Conversations at the American Film Institute with the Great Moviemakers: The Next Generation appears in the latest issue of Books and Culture. Later this week, Jeffrey will teach a fiction workshop at the Gove Hill Writer's Retreat in Vermont, and in September he'll lead a Laity Lodge seminar on storytelling alongside author Lauren Winner, Books and Culture editor John Wilson, and SPU's own John Medina. Kelly Provides Tips for Reading to Kids

University Communications Specialist Clint Kelly's article "Dad's Golden Story Hour" appeared in the June issue of Natural Awakenings magazine. The article urges fathers to read with their kids and offers unique ideas for how to "spice up" these precious and all-too-fleeting minutes together. Read the article online. More




Pope-Levison Updates

Priscilla Pope-Levison, professor of theology and assistant director of women's studies, preached the opening sermon for the Northeastern Jurisdicton Gathering of 800 United Methodist women in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Also, her article titled “Emma Ray in Black and White: The Intersection of Race, Region, and Religion" was published in the latest issue of Pacific Northwest Quarterly. Ray, an African American Free Methodist Conference evangelist, had ties to Seattle Pacific, and her funeral was held in First Free Methodist Church. Finally, Priscilla's blog post about the legacy of Pentecostal evangelist Florence Crawford was published at churchhistory.org. Read it online. More
