|Newly Admitted Students, Families on Campus August 10|
SPU will host the last New Student Advising event of the season on Friday, August 10. We are expecting around 150 newly admitted students and their families, so you are sure to feel their presence if you're on campus. This academic orientation program is from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and new students will be advised and registered for their Autumn Quarter classes. Celebrating any departmental milestones or alumni reunions in 2013? The Alumni Office is planning Homecoming 2013, January 24-26, and would love to support your gathering. In past years, alumni groups have celebrated significant anniversary reunions including crew's 40th reunion, the 70th anniversary of Family and Consumer Sciences, and the Theatre Department's 50th season. |Follow the Summer SPRINT Teams|
This summer, more than 40 SPU students are learning and serving in communities around the globe as they participate in a SPRINT trip. Students are in Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, and Vietnam. SPRINT participants are stepping out of their comfort zones, experiencing and encountering God, learning from the faith and example of others, and engaging in models of reconciliation and community development that demonstrate the wholeness of the Gospel. Doing some summer cleaning in your office? The SPU Archives wants your materials! If you have any items that show the history of the university or your department's part in it, please consider sending those items to the archives. Examples of archival materials include (but aren't limited to) department meeting minutes and agendas; department publications; photographs and memorabilia. |Mailing Services on Summer Schedule|
Mailing and Copying Services is now on its summer hours schedule. There will be one mail delivery and pickup time in the afternoon. The office is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. If you will be out of the office for an extended period of time, let Mailing Services know so that they can hold your mail for you until your return. If you have any questions or concerns, call 206-281-2077.

|Article by Krentz, Ewald Published|
Assistant Professor of Psychology Ursula Krentz and the C. May Marston Assistant Professor of Classical Languages and Civilizations Owen Ewald wrote an article titled "Beauty and Beholders: Are Past Intuitions Correct?" The article was published in in the journal Essays in Philosophy, published by Pacific University in Oregon. Building on their joint presentation at last fall's Day of Common Learning, their article examines four definitions of beauty from Western philosophy in light of recent work in psychology and biology. The article appears in the “Aesthestics and the Senses" theme issue of the journal and can be read online. More
|Kato Presents Paper|
Sharleen Kato, professor of family and consumer sciences, presented a paper on global service learning, acted as a voting delegate, and served as the U.S. director of programs and development at the International Federation of Home Economics (IFHE) World Congress in Melbourne, Australia, in July. IFHE works in collaboration with the United Nations, specifically on the committees focusing on the status of women and the well-being of children.

Revisioning Pentecostal Ethics: The Epicletic Community is the new book by Associate Professor of Theology Daniel Castelo. The book looks to describe Pentecostal ethics within the discipline of moral theology, looking particularly at the affections and virtues. Read more online. More
|Jenkins, Steinke to Present Paper|
Within software development, teams are created and disintegrate at an extremely rapid pace. Information technology organizations are therefore looking at ways to accelerate teamwork and performance. Adjunct Professor of Management Information Systems (MIS) Jim Jenkins and Professor of MIS Gerhard Steinke wrote a paper titled "Theory of Trusted Performance." The paper integrates organizational trust and organizational citizenship behavior to more clearly define a way to achieve high levels of teamwork. The paper will be presented at the International Information Management Association annual conference held in Chicago this October.
