Response Magazine Looking for Story Ideas

Following the visit of Madeleine Albright to the Downtown Business Breakfast and to SPU's campus, Response magazine will highlight stories of people who paved the way for others through their work, discoveries, and ideas. Stories could highlight faculty research discoveries, alumni who have been trailblazers in their careers, first-generation college students, and reflections on historical trailblazers. Camp Casey Summer Reservation Requests Due March 15

Summer reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates of stay currently available are June 16-September 29, 2014. The summer requests are based on years of service to SPU and past summer stays at Casey. Discover SPU's History

This year's Friends of the Library event features a panel of historians, archivists, and librarians examining the origins of Seattle Pacific University through the history of Seattle, the Pacific Northwest, and educational institutions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “God's Transformation of a Palestinian Fatah"

Tass Saada will speak in Otto Miller Hall 109 on Wednesday, March 12, at 7 p.m. Saada is the author of Once an Arafat Man: The True Story of How a PLO Sniper Found a New Life. He was converted to Christ and now devotes his life to peacemaking and reconciliation among Jews, Christians, and Muslims. His talk is titled "From Assassin of Jews and Christians to Peacemaker: God's Transformation of a Former Palestinian Fatah Operative." The event is sponsored by the student club Political Union.




Music Concerts This Week

SPU's Percussion and Flute Ensembles will perform on Tuesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the E.E. Bach Theatre located inside of McKinley Hall. The Percussion Ensemble is directed by Instructor of Percussion Dan Adams, and the Flute Ensemble is directed by Instructor of Flute Sandra Saathoff. SPU's Concert Choir and Chamber Singers Choir will perform on Thursday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church. The concert is directed by SPU's Assistant Professor of Choral Music David Anderson. The events are free and wheelchair accessible. More




"A Taste of Italy" in Gwinn Commons

SPU Dining Services is hosting "A Taste of Italy" for dinner on Wednesday, March 12, 5-8 p.m. in Gwinn Commons. Executive Chef Joseph Russo will prepare calamari, minestrone, specialty pizza, a bruschetta bar, cannoli, and tiramisu.There is no additional charge for this special menu. More




Gwinn Commons Dining Hall Group Meal Requests

Conference Services (CS) can help faculty or staff plan a group meal (Monday-Friday) in the Gwinn Commons Dining Hall. CS is now coordinating meal service arrangements for all internal groups made up of 11 or more people when charged to an SPU account. This will streamline service to make sure your group has a pleasant dining hall experience.

CS needs to receive meal order information at least two weeks ahead of the scheduled meal. At that point, a preliminary order will be placed. The department must make CS aware of their guarantee number no fewer than five days before the scheduled meal, and this number will be submitted as final. As we know, guest numbers do tend to change; we can extend service to 10 percent over the guarantee number up to 200 guests, or 20 additional guests for groups of more than 201.

Meal tickets will be distributed to guests and collected by the dining hall cashier. CS will provide an official count of meal tickets collected and bill the department accordingly. Departments will be charged for the guarantee number or actual count of guests (if higher) immediately following the event.

CS looks forward to working with faculty and staff. You can request meal service in Gwinn Commons at any time by filling out an online form on the CS website. Learn More About Your Numbers and Get $100

Do you know your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, pulse, and Body Mass Index? Are you covered by one of SPU's medical plans? If you don't know these numbers and missed the onsite screenings last week, you can schedule an appointment with your own doctor to get the same information. Your doctor will need to provide your results to Summit Health via a special fax by March 31, 2014. The form can be found on the Human Resources website under “SPU Wellness Program." You must fast at least eight hours before your test, having only water, black coffee, or medications. As with prior years, you will also need to complete an online health assessment for the $100 incentive. Information on access and dates of that assessment will be forthcoming. Do you have technical questions or need a refresher on how to use Sitecore or Contribute to update your department's website? Come to the brownbag lunch and get your questions answered. Bring your lunch and laptop, and you'll get one-on-one help from the University Communications Web Team. Mobile Mammograms April 3

Swedish Hospital will have a mobile mammogram unit on campus Thursday, April 3. The mobile clinic is a full-service, self-contained, 64-foot mammography clinic on wheels. The clinic features the latest in digital full-field mammography technology, as well as a complete rooftop satellite system enabling the transmission of images to radiologists at Swedish. The clinic will be outside the Student Union Building on 3rd Avenue. Book your appointment now online. More




HSA and Tax Information

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), you may need to file a 1099 with the IRS. Cigna has mailed these forms to your home. If you did not receive a 1099 in the mail, there are three possible reasons:
1. You did not have any HSA funds in your account in 2013
2. You had HSA funds, but did not make withdrawals from your account (i.e., debit card, checks, auto claim forwarding, or electronic transfers).
3. You signed up to have your 1099 sent to you electronically – via the website. This was a profile selection when you opened your account.

You can still receive the 1099 by mail by visiting the Chase Bank portal at the mycigna.com. Instructions to get into the portal and additional information about where to find the electronic 1099 can be found on the Human Resources website. More




SPU Hosts Washington Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, March 13-14

SPU will welcome more than 100 high school students to campus as part of the annual Washington Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (WJSHS), March 13-14. These students from across Washington state have completed outstanding science, math, technology, and engineering research. They will present their work in both oral presentation and poster format both days in Upper Gwinn Commons. Faculty and staff are especially invited to come by and see the poster presentations on Thursday, March 13, 2-3 p.m. If you see students on campus who have special name tags, please give them a personal welcome. Staff Payroll and Benefit Changes?

The 15th of each month is the last day to make changes to your upcoming payroll check. Do you need to remove your spouse and/or children from your health care plans? If so, contact Human Resources (HR) to complete the appropriate form. It must be submitted to HR by the 15th of the month, prior to your dependent's access to new coverage. Otherwise, the change can only occur the subsequent month, and any premiums paid will not be refunded. Changes might also include events that are expected to impact your benefits and deductions, such as your spouse or children gaining or losing coverage due to employment, birth, marriage, etc. Additionally, any changes you wish to make to your 403b account contributions must be made by the 15th of the month. For changes to your 403(b) account, contact Transamerica Retirement Solutions 1-888-676-5512 (5 a.m.-6 p.m. PST), or 1-800-755-5801. If you have any other benefits-related changes, call Carrie McCrimmon in Human Resources at 206-281-2676.

Saunders Wins Graves Award

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Leland Saunders received a $10,100 Graves Award in Humanities to support his research project "The Structure of Moral Judgment: Philosophical Perspectives." The research centers on questions in moral psychology, with an emphasis on the psychological processes of moral judgment and their relationship to questions in moral theory and metaethics.

The prestigious Graves Award, under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Studies, is available to humanities scholars of "fully credited, privately endowed liberal arts colleges in California, Oregon, and Washington." Winners of the 2011-13 Graves Award included professors from the University of the Pacific, Dominican University, Reed College, Occidental College, and Stanford University.

Baah's Essay Published

An essay by Professor of Spanish and Latin American Literature Robert Baah was recently published in Romance Notes. The essay is titled “Return to the Past in García Márquez's El amor en los tiempos del cólera."




Sink's Book Published

A new book by Professor of Counselor Education Chris Sink was recently published by Hakjisa Publishing in Korea. The book, Child Adolescent Counseling and Spirituality: School Counseling in Positive Psychology, was co-authored by international research associates Drs. D.H. Kim and M. Seo.




Professors' Article Published

An article by faculty members Don Lee and Paul Kim was recently published in the journal Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. The research article is titled “Internalized Model Minority Myth, Asian Values, and Help-Seeking Attitudes Among Asian American Students." Don is assistant professor of strategy in the School of Business and Economics, and Paul is assistant professor of psychology.

THIS MONTH IN THE GARDEN

Cornelian Cherry Dogwood or Cornus mas

From SPU Master Gardner Jeff Daley. We all know the life of a flower blossom is relatively short, and a year is a long time to wait until you can see it bloom again. This gives us all the more reason to choose trees, shrubs and perennial plants for our gardens that flower at different times throughout the year. For me, the anticipation of waiting each year for that favorite flower or tree to bloom brings a reminder of days gone by.

Early bloomers jump-start the announcement of the flowering season, and this month's choice is definitely a unique early bloomer − the Cornelian Cherry Dogwood or Cornus mas. Flowering dogwood trees are always a favorite with their bold display of color, and many new cultivars extend their blooming season from mid-April until the first of July.

Though Cornus mas has been around for a very long time when you see it in full bloom at the end of winter, you likely do not recognize it as a dogwood. First of all, it's yellow, and most of us think pink or white when we think of dogwood. Secondly, this variety of dogwood doesn't have bracts, the four petals that form what we think of as the flower. The flowers in a Cornus mas are round, pale-yellow "popcorn ball" clusters of star-shaped blossoms. They have a light fragrance that reminds me of spring, and can brighten any grey overcast Seattle day. The trees tend to form multiple trunks with an exfoliating bark that gives it structure and texture. In the evening, outdoor lighting shining on this tree can make quite a dramatic statement.

Around August, the tree produces little olive shaped cherry-like fruits called drupes which can be used to make jams, jellies, and chutney. They are high in vitamin C and are thought to help fight the common cold and the flu. In autumn, the Cornus mas is great as a fall ornamental tree as the leaves turns a yellowish orange with burgundy highlights.

There is only one Cornus mas on campus, and it's blooming now in the north Weter Hall courtyard, just outside the office of University Communications. If you'd like to see them planted en masse, visit the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture where they have a large planting at the entrance that are also now in bloom.
