Welcome to the Fac/Staff Bulletin

The Fac/Staff Bulletin is the weekly, internal newsletter for SPU faculty and staff. All faculty and staff receive the Bulletin, and most items are submitted by its readers. Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information to the Bulletin at fsb-editor@spu.edu, or by selecting “Submit Bulletin Items" from the Bulletin itself. The Bulletin is published on Mondays, and the deadline to submit information is Thursdays. The editor is Tracy Norlen, news and media relations manager in University Communications. The Bulletin is divided into five main sections.

Announcements highlight the major news and events on campus. Only events related to SPU will be accepted. All faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information, including department news, academic deadlines, campus events, and guest speakers. Digital photos and graphics are especially welcome. When possible, event information will be published two weeks prior to the event. Remember to plan ahead when submitting information. Included in the Announcement section are:

From the Archives is a new monthly feature showcasing photographs from the SPU Archives provided by University Archivist Adrienne Meier. The feature runs the last week of each month.

Pet Photo of the Week features pet photos submitted by faculty and staff. You are encouraged to send two photos of your pet, including the pet's name and a couple of sentences explaining the pictures, to Bulletin editor Tracy Norlen at fsb-editor@spu.edu. If your pet has already been featured, you are welcome to submit another picture and story.

Faculty and Staff News is for professional news related to your position at SPU or in higher education. Items of interest are conferences attended, books or articles written or published, presentations made, awards received, research completed, or a new title or position. Please don't be shy! We especially would like more professional news from SPU staff.

SPU in the News lists most of the print or broadcast media appearances by faculty and staff. If you've been used as a resource for a reporter, let us know by submitting it to the Bulletin.

Milestones is for personal news of interest to the SPU community, including births, adoptions, marriages, anniversaries, church service, mission trips, awards, athletic accomplishments, or anything else you'd like the whole campus to know! Digital photos are always welcome!

Chinese Poets Visit SPU

Two Chinese poets, Xi Chuan and Zhou Zan, are on a six-city reading tour of the United States, including a stop at SPU on Friday, September 30, 9:30–10:50 a.m. in Cremona 102 (The new classroom building next to First Free Methodist Church.) The tour celebrates the new bilingual anthology Push Open the Window: Contemporary Poetry From China published by Copper Canyon Press. Xi Chuan is a leading Chinese poet who has published five collections of poetry and founded the literary magazine Qingxiang (Tendency), and now serves as editor of Dangdai Gouji Shitan (Contemporary Poetry International). Zhou Zan edits Wings, a journal of contemporary Chinese poetry written by women. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend the event on Friday. The Graduate Center Has Moved

The Graduate Center (i.e., Graduate Admissions and Marketing) has moved from its old location in Lower Weter Hall to Demaray Hall 258. Please direct any prospects for graduate programs to the new Demaray Hall office.




Autumn Quarter Lectio on Joshua/Judges Begins Today

“Joshua is not about ‘salvation' or ‘heaven' or ‘peace with God' in the ways we expect of a religious book. Joshua is about land. It is about land for Israel. Aren't Christians supposed to be citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20)? No wonder Joshua seems antiquated and irrelevant. When viewed all by itself, as an isolated story, Israel's taking of the land of Canaan might seem dull and irrelevant. However, the book of Joshua is not the beginning of a story, but the middle of a story that goes all the way back to Genesis." So writes Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies Nijay Gupta in this week's Lectio, Week 1 of Joshua/Judges. Only Four Days Left for Sacred Sounds Early-Bird Tickets!

Don't miss out on early-bird discounted tickets for SPU's 12th annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas, featuring SPU's acclaimed Concert Choir, Wind Symphony, SPU Orchestra, and Women's and Men's Choirs performing sacred and traditional Christmas music from around the world. Again we are offering two performances: Monday, November 28, and Tuesday, November 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Benaroya Hall. Through September 30, you can get individual tickets for $15, and groups of 10 or more tickets for $12 per ticket. Beginning October 1, tickets are $17 and $20, with no group discounts. Undergraduate Academic Counselor Drop-In Appointments

The undergraduate academic counselors will accept drop-in appointments during the first week of Autumn Quarter for students with scheduling issues. Appointments can be scheduled in the Demaray Hall lobby during the following hours: September 26, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; September 27, 10:30 a.m.–4.p.m.; September 28¬-30, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.




Free Yoga Sessions on Thursdays

Are you stressed, tired, or tense? Do you spend most of your day seated or in one position? Kathy Stetz, professor of nursing and registered Hatha yoga teacher, along with the Wellness Committee, invite you to weekly yoga sessions on Thursdays in the First Free Methodist Church gymnasium. Sessions are September 29–December 8, 12:30–1:30 p.m. (some date exceptions apply). All experience levels are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a blanket, towel, or mat. Give yourself five WebMD points each month you participate. Do a variety of other healthy activities and once you earn your 50 for the quarter, you get $50 in your 2012-13 flexible spending account.




On Track: Degree Planner Now Available

Faculty and staff who advise students can now encourage students to visit and use SPU's new retention site, On Track: Degree Planner. This site details the steps students must take each year to stay on course to graduate on time. You're encouraged to reference the site when advising students, using the list of tasks for their academic year as a guide for their progress. More




Faculty, Staff Receive Free Falcon Athletic Tickets!

The Falcons invite all faculty and staff to join us for another exciting year of SPU athletics, and it won't cost you a dime. Faculty and staff receive complimentary general admission tickets (including spouse and dependent children) to all regular season home events in Brougham Pavilion and Interbay Stadium. Simply show your staff I.D. at the Brougham Pavilion ticket window.




Know a Lawyer, Financial Advisor, or Accountant?

University Advancement will host a luncheon meeting at noon on Monday, October 24, in Upper Gwinn. The luncheon will feature Vice President for Academic Affairs Les Steele as keynote speaker, sharing his thoughts on “The Personal and Public Good of Higher Education." The Professional Advisor's Network is a group of attorneys, financial advisors, accountants, and other professionals who support SPU's mission. Important Registration Deadlines

Increasing class enrollment ends Friday, September 30. If you would like to accommodate more students into your course, and the room capacity of the classroom would not be exceeded, contact SAS coordinators of schedules/publications Tiffany Shelton at shelton@spu.edu or Lee Staman at stamal@spu.edu) by 3 p.m. on Friday, September 30 to have your class enrollment increased.
Last day to add/drop classes is Friday, September 30. Students are able to register, add, and drop courses until 5 p.m. on Friday, September 30. After this time, web registration is no longer available for Autumn Quarter. This is the last day to register for classes, including those that meet once a week.
Other registration deadlines.
Friday, October 7. Students wishing to take a course pass/no credit or register for an internship, independent study, dissertation, music ensembles, or individual instruction in music may do so in SAS in Demaray Hall 151 until 4:30 p.m., Friday, October 7.

From the Archives

In the fall of 1963, Seattle Pacific had a record enrollment of 1,730 students as the headline on the front page of the October Alumni Bulletin proudly declares. That year, 1,300 of those students gathered in First Free Methodist Church to attend the Fall Convocation, with the main address delivered by Psychology Professor Philip Ashton. Pet Photo of the Week Resumes Next Week

The “Pet Photo of the Week" will resume in the October 3 edition of the Bulletin. Please send two photos of your pet with a brief story explaining the photos to Bulletin editor Tracy Norlen at fsb-editor@spu.edu. Everyone is free to submit new photos of their pets if they have been previously featured in the Bulletin. (The dog to the right is Wimsey, owned by Web Editor Hope McPherson. Wimsey passed away in April.)

Question for Professors: How Does Being in Seattle Help Students Learn?

etc magazine is looking for stories of how SPU's location helps enhance academic programs. Do you teach a class that utilizes the city in ways that a rural school could not? Or is there something about our location in the Northwest that benefits students academically? We want to go beyond internship opportunities, and look at how the city is being used in the classes. Parrott's New York Times Best-seller

The School of Psychology, Family, and Community is pleased to note that a book by Les Parrott, professor of psychology, and his wife, Leslie Parrott, co-director with Les of the Center for Relationship Development, is currently a No. 1 New York Times best-seller. The Hour That Matters Most focuses on the importance of families making the evening meal together a high priority. Ferreiro's Summer Updates

Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro was a summer visiting professor at the University of Salamanca in Spain, where he taught students from SPU, Western Washington, University of Oregon, Butler, and Dartmouth. He also delivered the paper "Pope Siricius and Himerius of Tarragona (385): An Example of Provincial Papal Intervention in the Fourth Century" at the XVI International Conference on Patristic Studies, August 8-12, at Oxford University. He also carried out research and relaxation in Antwerp, Belgium, and Salamanca in preparation for upcoming conferences in Boston, Lisbon, Finland, Fribourg, and Serbia for 2012-13.
