It's Snowing? Is SPU Open?

The quickest way to learn if SPU is closed or running late due to inclement weather is to call the Emergency Closure Hotline at 206-281-2800. The phone line will be updated before 6 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.

Employee Benefit and Payroll Changes Due by the 15th of Each Month

The 15th of each month is the last day to make changes to your upcoming payroll check. Do you need to remove your spouse and/or children from your health care plans? If so, contact Human Resources (HR) to complete the appropriate form. It must be submitted to HR by the 15th of the month, prior to your dependent's access to new coverage. Otherwise, the change can only occur the subsequent month, and any premiums paid will not be refunded. Changes might also include events that are expected to impact your benefits and deductions, such as your spouse or children gaining or losing coverage due to employment, birth, marriage, etc. Additionally, any changes you wish to make to your 403b account contributions must be made by the 15th. For changes to your 403(b) account, contact Transamerica Retirement Solutions at 1-888-676-5512 (5 a.m.- 6 p.m. PST), or 1-800-755-5801. If you have any other benefits-related changes, call Carrie McCrimmon, associate director of Human Resources, at 206-281-2676.

Focus on Formative Assessment Workshop for Faculty

A “Focus on Formative Assessment" workshop will be held Wednesday, December 11, 12-1 p.m. in the Library classroom. This workshop will cover the basics of formative assessment, why it is important, and how it can be used, in addition to discussing a few tools that can be incorporated into your assessments, including ePortfolios and the Poll Everywhere free account. The Faculty/Staff Bulletin is published every Monday during the academic year. Deadlines for submissions are Thursdays. If you have information or event news, send it as soon as possible to Faculty/Staff Bulletin editor Tracy Norlen at fsb-editor@spu.edu. Submissions may be edited for clarity. The last Bulletin for Autumn Quarter will be published Monday, December 16. The next deadline is Thursday, December 12.


Reese Named "Volunteer of the Year"

Ashley Reese, coordinator of Multi-Ethnic Programs, was recognized as "Volunteer of the Year" by Urban Impact. Ashley was honored for her volunteer work with Rainier Health & Fitness, whose mission is to combat physical health disparities in the Rainier Valley through an accessible fitness center that encourages healthy lifestyles, strong bodies, and community. Congratulations, Ashley!

Tucker Contributes Chapters

Disability Support Services Coordinator Angela Tucker is a contributing author in two new books. Angela contributed a chapter to Perpetual Child: Adult Adoptee Anthology: Dismantling the Stereotype (The AN-YA Project), and Woven Together: Testimonies to God's Grace in Adoption. The documentary "Closure" featuring Angela also recently went on sale to the public.

Alsbury Trains Washington School Board Members

Thomas Alsbury, professor of educational administration and supervision, provided a workshop at the Washington School Directors Association annual conference in Bellevue on November 21. The title of the workshop was "Secrets of Highly Effective School Boards." Board members from more than 70 school districts attended the all-day workshop, which provided board self-assessment tools and approaches to improving school board support of improved student learning.
