Applying to Your Major/Minor

Biology
Consistent with its mission, SPU’s Biology Department admits students to its majors and minors on the basis of academic achievement, personal character, leadership potential, and record of service.

Application to the Biology Major

The application for Biology major status should be made by the beginning of the junior year, after completion of the sequence in general biology. Transfer students are eligible to apply after successful completion of at least one 5-credit upper-division biology course at SPU.

Applications are considered individually by the biology faculty, but the normal minimum requirement for admission will be a GPA of 2.5 in biology courses taken at SPU if you are applying to the BA Biology, BS Biology, BS Cellular & Molecular Biology, or BS Ecology majors. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in biology courses taken at SPU is necessary if you are applying to the BS Applied Human Biology or BS Physiology majors.

To apply for a Biology major, you must make a formal application through your Degree Status Check page in Banner. You'll need to be admitted to a major before taking most upper-division biology courses. Admission is selective and based upon prior academic performance. This brief video explains how to apply through Banner.

Application to the Biology Minor

Applications for a minor in Biology or in Bioethics and Humanities are considered individually by the biology faculty, but the normal minimum requirement for admission to the Biology minor will be a GPA of 2.5 in biology courses taken at SPU. A student must complete the minor requirements in effect when the student is admitted to the minor.

To apply to the Biology minor or to the Bioethics and Humanities minor, you must make a formal application through your Degree Status Check page in Banner. This brief video explains how to apply through Banner.
