Lena Wirth

Major: Biochemistry

What are you most proud of from your time at SPU?

As a pre-med student and a student athlete, I am proud of how I balanced my time over the past four years. I was able to succeed in athletics and academics, while participating in extracurricular activities. This would not have been possible without all the support from my professors, coaches, teammates, and friends.

What is a fun fact about you?

I am bilingual and speak fluent German.

What are some of your career goals?

I have been working at Fred Hutch for two years, and I will continue to work in the lab after graduation. This opportunity has granted me many valuable experiences, and I am excited to work on an adoptive T-cell immunotherapy project. I am applying to medical school next year, and I hope to pursue a career in oncology or orthopedics.

What is something you wish everyone knew about your major?

I wish everyone knew about the undergraduate research experiences that students acquire in upper division classes. Classes including genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology allowed me to participate in undergraduate research and enrich my learning experiences. I also wish that everyone knew how supportive the science professors are. They go out of their way to support students and ensure that we are challenged and receive quality education.

What is a piece of advice you’d like to leave for those still in school?

Science classes are rigorous at SPU, but don't get discouraged! I found a very supportive group of friends in my classes early on at SPU and we have been through everything together. School is difficult, but having a group of friends undergoing the same journey makes the hard times easier. Another important piece of advice is to find extracurricular activities and hobbies outside of school.
