What is your major?
I am getting my
Master of Science in Research Psychology
What is something you wish everyone knew about your major?
This graduate program is very flexible; your capstone project can be on any topic of interest that you want to research and learn more about.
What was your most impactful class or professor?
My capstone project advisor, Dr. Eduardo Fernandez, has been very impactful throughout the whole process of brainstorming, developing, creating, analyzing, and presenting my capstone project. If it wasn’t for his knowledge and connections, I likely wouldn’t be able to conduct my research at the Seattle Aquarium.
What are some of your career goals?
I would like to be a researcher studying animal behavior, whether that be in a zoo/aquarium, or with another research organization. I’m interested in learning more about marine mammals and ways that humans can care for animals and engage in effective conservation.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
For students entering the research psychology program, I recommend getting connected with a professor who can advise you on your project as soon as possible. It is also helpful to come into the program with a general idea of what you want to research for your capstone project. For incoming undergraduate students, my advice is to develop relationships with your professors, because they really do want to help you. Going into their office hours is a good way to get connected with them.
What SPU has meant to you?
SPU has been a place where I have grown in my passions, developed skills for my future career, pursued college athletics, and created lifelong relationships. I have also seen the value that everyone — regardless of gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation — brings to the table and that everyone deserves to be treated with love and respect.
