Dr. Coba Canales is the new vice president for Student Life and dean of students at Seattle Pacific University, effective July 8, 2026.
“What stood out throughout the search process was Coba’s deep investment in students as whole persons — spiritually, emotionally, academically, and relationally.” said SPU President Deana L. Porterfield. “His leadership reflects both conviction and compassion, combining strong Christian faith with humility, curiosity, and care for others.”
Canales most recently served as dean of students at Azusa Pacific University in California, where he provided leadership for Residence Life, Campus Life, Spiritual Life, Student Health, Counseling Services, Accessibility and Disability Resources, Commuter Life, Title IX, and Student Conduct. Prior to this role, he served as dean of Spiritual Life and campus pastor, helping shape the spiritual formation and discipleship efforts of the university. He also served as an adjunct professor and is actively engaged in leadership within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities and the Association of Christians in Student Development.
Canales has a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Southern California. He earned a master of divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary and a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies from Azusa.
In his new role at SPU, he will oversee Student Life; Student Ministries; Housing and Residence Life; Student Counseling, Health, and Wellness; Multi-Ethnic Programs, Athletics, and several other departments.
“I am thrilled to join Dr. Porterfield and the Seattle Pacific community and look forward to supporting SPU’s mission to engage the culture and change the world by cultivating an excellent student experience and remaining committed to the formation of every SPU student,” said Canales. “God is evidently at work at SPU and I am eager to partner with faculty, staff, and administration to continue a rich tradition of Christian higher education in the Pacific Northwest.”
