Tent City 3 Returns to Seattle Pacific University
Seattle, WA For the second time in three years, the campus of Seattle Pacific University will host Tent City 3 (TC3), a roving community shelter of men and women experiencing homelessness. TC3 will set up their tents on the northeast lawn of the Student Union Building (corner of West Bertona Street and Third Avenue West) on Saturday, December 13, and stay through March, 7, 2015.
“Hosting Tent City 3 is a concrete manifestation of Seattle Pacific University’s mission to engage the culture and change the world,” says SPU President Dan Martin. “It provides our community a unique opportunity to care for and learn from our neighbor.”
During their stay in 2012, students, faculty, and staff reached out in numerous ways to get to know their new neighbors. Students organized several events, including book clubs, chess matches, music jam sessions, and knitting and crocheting nights. Art faculty organized a collaborative painting project, and other faculty invited TC3 members to speak in their classrooms.
In preparation for the upcoming visit, SPU is hosting community education forums, including homeless documentary screenings and panel discussions on topics such as veterans and homelessness, affordable housing, youth, and advocacy. Visit the TC3 at SPU website for the latest information.
