Jamal Washington grew up in Seattle and graduated from Garfield High School. He had fond memories of the technical trade education offered at that time and took courses in machining woodworking and auto mechanics.
With a passion for fixing and building things, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee Construction mechanic, working on gas and diesel equipment. While at Puget Sound Naval shipyard, he overhauled and retrofitted aircraft carriers and submarines assemblies and components and for 22 years. At the Boeing company, he assembled and manufactured parts for different airplane programs.
Today, Mr. Washington consider himself an "Ingenuity Specialist," solving problems with the application of technical trade skills. His teaching style is based of respect, integrity, teamwork, and commitment to community excellence and innovative problem solving.
Mr. Washington and his wife and have three grown children and three grandchildren. They are Seattle Sounders fans and rarely miss a home game. They also enjoy outdoor activities such as camping and fishing with family and friends and, in fact, he took her fishing on their first date years ago.
