Ivy Cutting

Saturday, June 11, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., Tiffany Loop

About Ivy Cutting

Ivy Cutting has been part of graduation rites at SPU since 1922. Graduating students and SPU faculty don their academic regalia and assemble in Tiffany Loop beneath towering elm trees, continuing this tradition. The ceremony represents both the students’ ties to SPU and the independence that comes with graduation. Graduates should wear caps and gowns. This is an outdoor ceremony, so please dress accordingly.

Getting There

Please refer to the directions and parking page for more information.

Guest Arrival

Guests are welcome to start arriving any time after 2:00 p.m. Unless otherwise marked, all seating is available.

Student Line-Up

Graduates should line up at 2:45 p.m. on the Fifth Avenue Streetscape (between Marston and Weter). See the undergraduate instructions page for more information.

Ivy Cutting Speaker

Bob Drovdahl is both an SPU Alum and a recent Emeritus Professor of Educational Ministry. In his decades at Seattle Pacific, Bob has been a 4.0 undergraduate student, a member of the wrestling team, the director of Camp Casey, a professor, a member and a chair of numerous faculty committees, an acting dean, and an associate dean.

He received the President's Award for Excellence and Faculty Service Award, and was named Top Prof by Ivy Honorary and Advisor of the Year. His service as a longstanding member and past president of the National Association of Professors of Christian Education testifies to his leadership in the discipline.

Recently Bob could be found on the pickleball courts with faculty and staff he recruited, or leading a weekly student bible study on the Psalms. Bob will be spending his retirement traveling with his wife, and enjoying time with his two grown children and five grandchildren.

The ceremony will be recorded for livestreaming purposes and will be available for viewing on the livestreaming page. The recording of the ceremony will also be posted on this page, but may not be available until a week or so afterward. No other videographers are allowed in any aisle or near the platform.

Rain Plan

A rain plan will go into effect if there is a forecast for severe weather, including heavy rain and/or thunder and lightning. Students will receive a notification if the rain plan is put into action. Please refer to the rain plan page for more information. Please note that students will be issued only up to four rain plan tickets for guest entrance into Royal Brougham Pavilion. (If the ceremony is held outdoors, no tickets are required.)

You are free to take photographs and video of this beautiful ceremony. We respectfully ask you to remain inside the designated seating areas, and not venture out into the aisles and pathways.
