What is something you wish everyone knew about your major? Something I wish everyone knew about my major is that it’s not just an academic pursuit, but a personal calling to contribute positively to society and deeply understand the pervasive power imbalances that exist in the world around us. This major goes beyond the classroom, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to challenge injustices and advocate for those who are marginalized. It instills a sense of responsibility to effect change and promotes a lifelong commitment to social equity and justice.
What was your most impactful class or professor? Dr. Brenda McNeil's Race and Reconciliation course was most impactful for me. The course not only confronted and dismantled my preconceived notions but also reshaped my entire perspective on the concept of justice and law. The course ultimately forged my commitment to understanding and addressing social inequities through the Social Justice and Cultural Studies major.
What are you excited for in your future career? Despite not knowing exactly where I'll end up, there are several aspects of my future career that I'm excited about. I'm looking forward to making a tangible difference in people’s lives by advocating for policy changes, providing legal assistance, and working with community organizations. I'm passionate about empowering individuals and communities who may not have the resources to advocate for themselves, and I look forward to building a network of like-minded professionals and activists to inspire partnerships and collective action.
What advice do you have for incoming students? Allow curiosity to be your guiding force throughout this journey and aspire to become a compassionate advocate for a more just and equitable world. Never hesitate to seek assistance from your professors, I promise you that their knowledge and dedication are invaluable resources. Make an effort to connect with fellow students in and out of your major too! Building a supportive network will not only enrich your learning experience but also provide a community that shares your passion for fostering positive change.
