Major: History, Classics
What are you most proud of from your time at SPU?
I feel that my experience at SPU has allowed me to learn how to better engage with ideas, whether that be through formal academic research, discussion with my classmates, or my experience studying abroad. I greatly appreciate that I have experienced enjoying research and integrating ideas explored in the classroom with my faith and outlook on life.
What is a fun fact about you?
I lived in England for six years when I was a child.
What are some of your career goals?
At some point in the near future (in a year or so), I intend to go to graduate school for museum studies, preferably somewhere that would allow me to interact with ancient history. I think I’d like to work in either museum collections or exhibit design.
What is something you wish everyone knew about your major?
I am a history and classics double major. For history, studying the subject is less about the facts and timelines and more focused on how one thinks about the past, being able to evaluate perspectives and information and fitting them into a larger understanding. For classics, the major is more concerned with ancient cultures and languages than it is with English literature, which might be confusing by the name.
What is a piece of advice you’d like to leave for those still in school?
Use the time that you’re still in school to explore the city of Seattle — its unique location, history, and culture, especially if you’re not from the area. At times it can be easy to live in a bubble of assignments and other school-related activities when there’s so much to be learned outside the classroom.
