Summer Tech Camps at SPU

Turn interests into career goals and dive into the exciting world of tech! Offered by SPU’s Department of Engineering and Computer Science, SPU’s Summer Tech Camps introduce high school students to the fundamentals of programming, AI, coding, game creation, 3D printing, and more. 

Each camp is limited to 20 participants.

FUNdamentals of Programming

This two-week summer camp designed for 9–12th graders (as of autumn 2020) to learn the fundamentals of computer programming as well as a few promising application domains, including the following:

  • Web: Learn how to create a web service
  • Artificial intelligence (AI): Make the best AI board game
  • Computer-aided simulation: Design your own evolutionary creatures and watch them grow
  • Data analytics: Use analytics to determine the best sports stars
  • Internet-of-things: Create a smart home and/or wearable computing application

During Week 1, you will learn the basics of programming and problem solving with Python language, followed by a variety of programming challenges in the above domains in Week 2. You will develop a series of interesting and meaningful applications and build a general understanding of how information is processed in computer systems and what is happening in top software engineering companies.

Dates: M–F, July 13–24

Time: 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (day camp, no overnight accommodations)

Location: Seattle Pacific University campus

Cost: $800 (if you register before March 1); $950 (if you register after March 1)

Game Creation Studio

SPU’s Game Creation Studio for Beginners is a one-week summer camp designed for ninth–12th graders (as of autumn 2020) interested in learning basic game creation techniques. No coding experience necessary.

  • Learn to use GameMaker
  • Create a storyline for a game
  • Learn basic graphic editing of sprites
  • Design your own game

You will learn basic development techniques using an intuitive game development tool. You’ll learn more about computer science as a career and the different opportunities available to you as a developer. You’ll develop a game of your own with help from SPU students and professors. And you’ll have the chance to present your creations.

Dates: June 22–26, 2020

Time: 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (day camp, no overnight accommodations)

Location: Seattle Pacific University campus

Cost: $525 (if you register before March 1); $675 (if you register after March 1)

Introduction to Mechatronics and 3D Printing

SPU’s Introduction to Mechatronics and 3D Printing for Beginners is a one-week summer camp designed for ninth–12th graders (as of autumn 2020) interested in learning mechatronics system and 3D printing technique. No 3D printing experience necessary.

  • Learn basic mechanical and electronics elements
  • Learn basic 3D modeling technique
  • Learn how to assemble and operate a 3D printer
  • Design your own 3D-printed project
  • Own the printer after the camp

In this camp, you will learn about a mechatronics system and its components. You will also learn how to assemble and operate a 3D printer, which is a typical mechatronics system. You will be exposed to basic 3D printing and 3D modelling techniques. By the end of the camp, you will be able to create your own 3D-printed project with help from SPU students and professors. And you will have a chance to show your peers how creative you are!

Cost: $685 (if you register before March 1); $835 (if you register after March 1)

Includes a 3D printer to take home! ($160 value)

Earn college credit and $1,000 towards college tuition

  • All participants who enroll in at least one SPU Summer Tech Camp will receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship for their freshman year at SPU.
  • Participants will also earn one University credit ($753 value).
