Dr. Joon Sohn earned bachelor’s degrees in French literature and business administration at Sogang University in the Republic of Korea. After working in the private sector for two years, he began his studies at Cornell University, where he received a master’s in applied statistics, a master’s in organizational behavior, and a doctorate in the same field.
Dr. Sohn’s research explores how local sociopolitical contexts influence organizations’ environmental performance. His overarching research interests center on organizations’ strategic responses and performance in different regional contexts. In particular, he is interested in understanding the influence of federal and local sociopolitical contexts on organizations’ pro-environmental choices, from eco-friendly venture creation to strategy implementation. Dr. Sohn draws on and contributes to a variety of literatures, including work on organization theory, economic sociology, and social psychology. More generally, his research contributes to a burgeoning, multi-disciplinary literature on the sustainability of corporations in global contexts.
As an educator, Dr. Sohn believes that teaching is not only about delivering useful information to students, but also about helping students to generate innovative ideas through collaboration. Being in the classroom with students engaging in the critical thinking process and learning from each other through discussions inspires him to be a better scholar.
The Sohn family is new to the Seattle area. Apart from church activities, they are still exploring the beauty of Seattle.
