PSA logoHistory
Founded in 1920 at the University of Texas, Pi Sigma Alpha is the only national honor society established for undergraduate and graduate students of political science.  The purpose Pi Sigma Alpha is to recognize and promote high academic achievement in the political science discipline.  It is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and adheres to all the standards set by ACHS for an upper-division, specialized honor society.  There are now nearly 800 chapters established in colleges and universities in the United States, with other chapters abroad.

Recognition
All Pi Sigma Alpha members receive a certificate of membership and pin, and permanent enrollment in the society's membership rolls maintained by the National Office.  Members inducted into the Alpha Kappa Xi chapter of the Seattle Pacific University School of Business, Government, and Economics are also listed in our local chapter honor roll.

Upon request, the National Office will provide letters verifying membership to prospective employers or graduate schools.  As a member of the Association of College Honor Societies, the United States Office of Personnel Management guarantees a higher entry-level grade to Pi Sigma Alpha members entering government service.  Members are entitled to wear the Pi Sigma Alpha key at any time, or the medallion with cap and gown at graduation and on other official occasions.

It is the tradition of the Alpha Kappa Xi chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha at SPU that graduating seniors wear the graduation medallion rather than the PSA honor cords at Ivy Cutting and Commencement.

Membership
Membership is open to junior and senior students who have demonstrated success in their political science studies. The Alpha Kappa Xi chapter at SPU has established these membership requirements.
  • Junior or senior status (minimum of 90 quarter credits completed).
  • Achievement of a minimum 3.50 overall grade point average from all colleges and universities attended.
  • Completion of at least 15 quarter-hour credits in political science coursework at SPU.
  • Achievement of a minimum 3.50 grade point average in political science coursework.
  • Both Political Science and Global Development Studies students who have met these requirements are eligible for membership.
Membership invitations are sent via SPU email to students in April each year.  Dr. Caleb Henry is the Chapter Advisor of our Alpha Kappa Xi chapter.
