What is your major?
Biochemistry major, with a minor in
Bioethics and Humanities.
What is something you wish everyone knew about your major?
Being a biochemistry major offers one the chance to design a target protein fragment and learn a lot of interesting facts about the structure and functions of proteins.
What was your most impactful class?
Molecular Biology was definitely my most impactful class! With a group of three other students, we got to design and complete a research project to understand antigenic variation in Mycoplasma genitalium as part of an National Institute of Health-funded study. We won an award for best oral presentation at this year’s SPU’s Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference after presenting the data from the project.
What are some of your career goals?
I hope to either go to medical school or graduate school after college. In the meantime, I plan to take a gap year and work as a research scientist at a lab here in Seattle. The courses I’ve taken at SPU truly equipped me with transferable skills and piqued my interest in scientific research.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
Although we all come to college as individuals, it pays to build relationships and collaborate with others. We are a family here at SPU. Find your niche, get to meet new people, and expand your horizons. Be open to new experiences and welcome all the opportunities for engagement at a liberal arts university!
