SPU President and Alumni Gather For Conversation

Legacy Reception Welcomes Alumni and Children

The Alumni Office hosted 75 alumni families during Orientation in September 2014 for the annual Legacy Reception, honoring alumni whose children are new students at SPU.

Homecoming 2014 Celebrates Alumni

2014 Homecoming Luncheon Hundreds of alumni from around the country enjoyed a wide-ranging slate of Homecoming events January 30–February 1, 2014. The lineup included a men’s basketball victory over Western Washington, class and department reunions, the Homecoming Talent Show, and live theatre performances of “The Miracle Worker.” At the Homecoming Luncheon, Young Alumnus of the Year Char Beck ’08 was honored for his life and work as a professional photographer. SPU also presented five alumni with Medallion Awards: Bob Ekblad ’82, Gracie Ekblad ’82, Jim Lyon ’74, Michele Weslander Quaid ’91, and Mike Quinn ’85.

Alumna Named Washington State Teacher of the Year

The 2014 Washington State Teacher of the Year is Katie Brown MEd ’09, an English Language Learner (ELL) specialist at Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham, Washington. Katie and her fellow nominees attended a special ceremony at the White House in their honor.

“National Treasure” in Taiwan, Alumna Visits Campus

Doris Brougham ’53 visited campus on April 3, 2014, joined by the choir she had founded in 1962, Heavenly Melody. Hosted at First Free Methodist Church, the event highlighted Brougham’s work as one of the leading English language teachers in Asia and cofounder of an international gospel radio and television network.

Class of ’64 Celebrates 50-Year Reunion

Graduates from 1964 journeyed back to campus June 13, 2014, in celebration of their 50-year reunion. The alumni, including outgoing Alumni Association President Gary Newbill ’64, received special recognition at Ivy Cutting and spent the day reconnecting with old friends.

Jones Named Alumni Director

SPU named Bryan Jones ’99 alumni director, following an interview process that included alumni, faculty, staff, and students. He assumed the position on July 1, 2014, bringing previous experience at SPU, including as associate director of admissions and as a development officer. Jones brings to his new role a record of outstanding leadership and managerial experience in SPU’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and substantial fundraising experience in the Office of Development. A communicator and strategic thinker with a genuine heart for SPU and its mission, Jones has a deep desire to serve the University's alumni and parents. 

Teel Family Receives Philanthropy Award

At the November 14, 2013, President’s Circle Dinner, the Teel Family was honored with the President’s Award for Philanthropy. This award is given annually to an individual, couple, or family who have made a significant impact on SPU by generously investing their time, talent, and financial support. The Teel family includes multiple generations of alumni.
