Hi, there! My name is Madison. I graduated with my BS in Ecology and a minor in Chemistry. I also completed the PPHS program as a pre-medicine student. Despite what you may have heard about needing a certain degree to impress medical schools, I am a huge advocate for “unique” majors regardless of your post-graduate plans!
I grew up in Colorado, spending most of my time outdoors, cultivating my passion for the environment. I had always wanted to work in healthcare, but when I came to SPU, I was introduced to the field of ecology. Although I remained a pre-medicine student, I took every opportunity to study ecology – classes on Blakely Island, studying abroad in Belize, TAing for BIO2103, and researching the environmental effects of algae with Dr. Nelson. In my junior and senior years, I struggled with choosing the right career path for myself: ecology or medicine. Despite my uncertainty, I continued to hold leadership positions in the MAPS and Pre-Health Clubs, shadow physicians, and volunteer at the Bridge Care Center. I’m excited to say that after all of this, I have found a way to intertwine my passions for helping the earth and helping people. I am currently studying for the MCAT with the intent of applying to MD-MPH programs in 2021. The wellbeing of the environment and human health are inseparable, especially since the adverse effects of climate change disproportionately harm underserved communities. One day, I hope to provide care to these communities as an Emergency Medicine physician.
I had incredible mentors, including professors and students, throughout my time at SPU, and now I hope to help students who may be unsure of how to accomplish their goals. I understand not knowing what you want to do or not knowing how to get there. Please feel free to reach out to me if you want to talk or have questions about being a STEM student!
I currently live in Georgia; I am free Monday through Friday 4pm-9pm ET or any time on the weekends.
