English Language Proficiency

Undergraduate

Students who are non-native English speakers must demonstrate English proficiency. You can establish your English proficiency by submitting the official results from one of the following tests:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English)
  • EIKEN (for native Japanese speakers)

For more information on undergraduate admissions, visit the International Students Application website.

Graduate

If you are a non-native English speaker, you will need to demonstrate English proficiency, regardless of English language studies or academic history. The TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language is accepted by SPU graduate programs.

For more information on graduate admissions, visit the International Admissions website.

The Department of Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics offers “Language for Specific Purposes” to support international students with their English skills. Contact Kathryn Bartholomew, associate professor of languages, cultures, and linguistics at kbarthol@spu.edu or 206-281-3533.
