Applying to Your Major/Minor

McKenna Hall entrance

Consistent with its mission, SPU’s School of Business, Government, and Economics admits students to its majors and minors on the basis of academic achievement, personal character, leadership potential, and record of service.

To apply for an AccountingBusiness Administration, Economics, Global  Development StudiesPolitical Science, or Politics,Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) major, you must make formal application. You'll need to be admitted to a major before taking most upper-division major courses. Admission is selective and based upon prior academic performance.

Applications for the Political Science major are accepted year-round.  Applications for the other five SBGE majors are only accepted between December 20 and January 20 each year. All applications are available in Banner.  "How to apply" instructions.

Application to Major in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or PPE

To meet the application requirements for admission to the Accounting, Business AdministrationEconomics, and PPE majors, you must:

  • Complete a minimum of 45 college-level credits (sophomore standing).
  • Complete at least 15 credits in accounting, business, or economics courses in SPU's School of Business, Government, and Economics. (Note: 10 credits for junior or senior transfer students.)
  • Have either a minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA from all institutions and a minimum of 2.7 cumulative GPA in all ACCT, BUS, and ECN courses completed at SPU, or an SBGE GPA of 3.0. (Attainment of the minimum GPA standard does not guarantee admission to a major, since the total number of admitted students is limited by capacity.)

Spreadsheet competency requirement. Demonstration of spreadsheet competency is required of all students graduating with a major in Accounting, Business Administration, or Economics.  Political Science majors must fulfill this requirement as as prerequisite to POL 4643. You must satisfy this by passing the MOS 77-420 (Excel 2013) or MOS 77-727 (Excel 2016) exam or BUS 1700 (where that exam is required).  Please become familiar with the full spreadsheet competency requirement. Sample exams are available on our CATC page.  This major requirement does not impact the admission to major process.

Once Admitted to SBGE

Once you are admitted to a major in the School of Business, Government, and Economics, all new ACCT, BUS, ECN, and GDS majors will attend an orientation evening held shortly after admission. This mandatory orientation will include information on the School’s mission and practical tips on succeeding in your major. All newly admitted ACCT, BUS, ECN, and GDS majors are required to attend this event.

Freshmen and Transfer “Direct Admissions”

A select group of highly qualified students are admitted directly to School of Business, Government, and Economics majors upon acceptance to Seattle Pacific University.

Incoming freshmen should identify their intended SBGE major on their application for admission to SPU, and they will automatically be considered for direct admission.

If you will be a freshman and identify your intended SBGE major when applying for admission to SPU, your declaration of interest does not commit you to a major within the School of Business, Government, and Economics. It assures you that an advisor from within the school will be assigned to you, and you’ll receive information about various School activities.

Transfer students who have completed four lower-division core courses within their intended SBGE major can also choose to be considered for direct admission when they apply for admission to SPU.

Direct admission is highly competitive. Transfer students not admitted to SBGE upon acceptance to SPU are encouraged to apply when they come to campus. Freshmen are encouraged to follow the traditional major application process, as well.

Application to Minors

To be admitted to a minor in Business Administration, Economics, or Entrepreneurship, you must have attained at least sophomore standing with 45 or more college-level credits, be admitted to a major, and have a minimum 2.9 cumulative GPA from all institutions you have attended.  To be admitted to a minor in Political Science, the minimum required GPA is 2.5.

Minor applications are accepted year-round.

Why I Teach at SPU

Kim Sawers, Associate Professor of Accounting

"I really love teaching, or I should say I love learning. I derive joy from my students as they learn, ask questions, and get that glimmer of understanding as they have an 'Ah-ha' moment. In addition, I enjoy seeing my students grow over the years."
