Seattle Pacific alumna Emma Burke ’21 is on her way to becoming a national park ranger. But her trail to finding her vocation was rocky.

Burke studied psychology and, in her studies, struggled to pinpoint what it was she wanted to do for her career. She enjoyed her major, but it was not what she wished to pursue after graduation. In her junior year at SPU, she came to a breaking point — she contemplated dropping out of college.

Burke joined a class offered by SPU’s Center for Career and Calling called “Finding Your Vocation.” The two-credit seminary-style course is offered every quarter to help students learn more about themselves and sense God’s call on their life. That was the case for Burke.

From Interim President Pete Menjares: As we approach Easter this year, I want to share this brief video with you. My prayer is that all of us encounter the risen Christ. In the words of the psalmist: “Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.” (Psalm 25:4–5 NRSV).

Andy Ekblad '84 is the founder and director of Beautiful Gate Ministries and provides training to pastors and leaders in developing nations, principally in Africa. He received much of his training in The School of Life, raising a profoundly disabled daughter until her death in 2013 and serving as a pastor for 30 years. Andy holds a master's of divinity and a master's of theology, and was further trained in spiritual direction at Soul Formation's Academy of spiritual formation and the school of spiritual direction.

"No Limits, No Boundaries," presented by SPU’s Disability Support Services on April 11, will feature author, poet, alumnus, and current staff member Jason Thornberry who will share his journey to recovery and writing.

A biannual event presented by SPU’s Disability Support Services, No Limits, No Boundaries is a celebration of difference and diversity that spotlights artistic expression and the commitment of community leaders to access, inclusion, and reconciliation. In the past, programs have spotlighted State Senator (later Lieutenant Governor) Cyrus Habib, ADA architect and principal of Studio Pacifica Karen Braitmayer, and have included an evening of movie shorts, and storytelling by students with disabilities.

This year’s awardee is Jason M. Thornberry, an SPU graduate and employee whose journey to recovery and writing will be the focus of the evening.

The increasing role and power of artificial intelligence in our lives and world requires us to imagine and shape a desirable future with this technology. Since visions of AI often draw from Christian apocalyptic narratives, current discussions about technological hopes and fears present an opportunity for a deeper engagement with Christian eschatological resources.

For the Spring Quarter Weter Lecture, Michael Paulus, dean of the library and assistant provost for educational technology, argues that the Christian apocalyptic imagination can transform how we think about and use AI, helping us discover ways artificial agency may participate in new creation.
