Carlos Snellenberg-Fraser

Carlos Snellenberg-Fraser What is your major?
Communication Studies, with a minor in Journalism

What is something you wish everyone knew about your major?
Communication is a broad study that exists in every industry out there. It extends beyond just speaking at events and writing press releases, as it incorporates storytelling, strategy, and an understanding of how to connect with others. No organization can function without clear and effective communication.

What was your most impactful class or professor?
One of the most impactful courses I took was media writing with Dr. Sara Shaban. I developed fundamental writing and story structure skills in this course that have helped me in several of my internships, some of which I got by using samples from this class. The combination of applying critical thinking, learning how to interview, and gaining an understanding of strong ethical responsibility prepared me for the real-world application of these concepts.

What are some of your career goals?
I would like to develop a career in either public relations, corporate communications, B2B sales, or freelance journalism. During my time at SPU, I had the opportunity to write for The Falcon and to gain internship experience in nonprofit leadership, public relations, and editorial writing.

What advice do you have for incoming students?
Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You are in college to learn and grow, so take advantage of the clubs and communities you have around you. I highly recommend searching for internships early in your third year. Finally, if you are studying communication and/or journalism, or you just enjoy writing, you should absolutely join The Falcon.

What SPU has meant to you?
SPU to me has meant growth, community, and excellence. I’ve grown into a better person both academically and internally during my time here at SPU. Through that growth, I have met amazing friends and colleagues, and I’ve created meaningful connections with the faculty and staff. I have also had the opportunity to interview people with The Falcon such as Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell. And third, I have learned what it means to be proud of the work you produce. SPU has been a university that has provided me support and guidance academically and at the same time holds each of its students to a high standard of excellence.
