“Can Women Speak in Public? How Early American Women Outmaneuvered Complementarians in Their Day”
with Dr. Jack Levison and Dr. Priscilla Pope-Levison
Renowned abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sarah Grimké once wrote of women, “I am inclined to think, when we are admitted to the honor of studying Greek and Hebrew, we shall produce some various readings of the Bible a little different from those we now have.” Join church historian Priscilla Pope-Levison and biblical scholar Jack Levison, as they unearth early American women’s fascinating interpretations of Paul’s mandate for women to keep silent in churches (1 Corinthians 14:34-35). Levison and Pope-Levison will explore some of the earliest treatises on this topic written within a generation of the Revolutionary War.
