Dr. Laura Holmes recently wrote a review of John’s Gospel and Intimations of Apocalyptic. Featured in “The Review of Biblical Literature” (RBL), she discusses different essays by Ashton, Robin Griffith-Jones, Benjamin Reynolds, Catrin Williams, and others on this subject of apocalyptic and John.
“Apocalyptic is a burgeoning interest in biblical scholarship, so it may be unsurprising to see a collection of essays published on apocalyptic and the Gospel of John. Still, one might ask: apocalyptic and John? Of the Gospels, John has the reputation for being the least interested in or influenced by the interest or the genre of Jewish and Christian apocalypses. Nevertheless, in 1991 John Ashton included a chapter entitled, “Intimations of Apocalyptic” in his magisterial volume, Understanding the Fourth Gospel …. [Ashton] concludes that John’s Gospel is most influenced by apocalyptic literature at the points where it emphasizes mystery and revelation, not exclusively eschatology.”
The RBL, "founded by the Society of Biblical Literature, presents reviews of books in biblical studies and related fields. Appearing in this digital form and [later] in print, RBL is comprehensive, international, and timely.” – The Review of Biblical Literature
