Introducing Taylor Pearson

Blessed with a childhood mostly on Bainbridge Island, I have always had the Pacific Northwest in my heart. While my adolescent and young adult years were spent primarily in California, I am thrilled to be back in rainy Seattle as I pursue God’s calling. With a dad from South Africa and mom born and raised on Bainbridge Island, I am grateful to have grown up with a view of the world that was influenced by multiple perspectives. My faith holds the same truth.

Moving frequently in my early years allowed an abundance of church experiences. Largely Presbyterian and non-denominational exposures to church life allowed insights into the different ways God establishes his people to live out the faith. Wyldlife was the first Christian leadership role I accepted, assisting in events and outreach. Volunteering in high school at my non-denominational church in Phoenix, Arizona, and then in Los Angeles where I finished high school, further refined my outlook on what it means to join his body of believers.

Despite original desires to work in the medical field or as a sport psychologist, I felt that the Lord called me into vocational ministry. Through secular work experience and a bachelor of science in psychology at California Polytechnic State University, I came to realize I am unable to help people without claiming the Truth of the One who helps me every day. While continuing to work at a church in California, God called me to apply to seminary for further discernment and knowledge. I am grateful to Seattle Pacific Seminary for empowering and equipping me as I live out his mission in Seattle.

How did you come to Seattle?

While searching for a program for my undergraduate degree in psychology, my interest was originally sparked by Seattle Pacific. While in high school in Los Angeles, I applied to SPU and visited the campus. While I was besotted with the school and Seattle, God knew it was not my time to return to the city. Completing my undergraduate at California Polytechnic State University allowed me a different skill set and financial flexibility. After I graduated, however, SPU continued to press on my mind. After applying to several seminaries and reviewing the specifics of SPS, my love for the university was rekindled. Upon touring again, God made clear that it was the right timing and the correct program for me. Now as I pursue my Master in Theology, I am thrilled that God has brought me to a seminary that feels like home.

What has made SPS meaningful to you?

A diverse student body, engaging professors, caring faculty, and the clear presence of the Spirit all describe my experience in studying at SPS. Seminary, as a family friend and pastor told me, is about investing just as much as receiving. This holds true at SPS. It has been a privilege to study alongside other faith leaders in class and hear how God is moving throughout Seattle. I have felt an outpouring of encouragement as I began working in ministry in a new city. I enjoy sharing sacred stories with other seminarians about what God is doing at University Presbyterian Church.

Doing ministry alone is not the intention of the Father but joining others in his work. Living alongside others of the faith in a largely de-churched city has been a source of deep joy. At SPS, I know my professors and fellow seminarians care not only for my vocational pursuits, but also for my faith. Seminary has been a holy space of fellowship, laughter, and instruction. There is an invitation to ask difficult questions, form a lasting faith community, and grow in reverence for what the Lord is working out.
