Grants

Federal, state and institutional grants are based on financial need. The FAFSA needs to be submitted each year to be considered for need-based grants. Students who are Washington residents and are unable to submit a FAFSA can submit the WASFA each year to be considered for need-based grants.

Federal Grants

Federal grants are awarded to eligible students who complete the FAFSA application. SPU cannot cover federal grant amounts if loss of eligibility or funding occurs.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students with financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

Amount: Up to $7,395 per year.

Application: FAFSA required each year.

Eligibility: Undergraduates with exceptional financial need as determined by the FAFSA

Amount: $100-$4,000 per year.

Application: FAFSA required each year

Eligibility: The TEACH grant is offered to would-be teachers and requires students who receive them to pursue specific endorsements and teach in high-need fields, in a high-need area. If requirements are not met, the grant becomes a loan.

Amount: Up to $4,000 per year.

Application: FAFSA required each year.

 

*Beginning Fall 2024, TEACH Grant recipients will communicate directly with the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and not a separate TEACH Grant servicer.

Washington State Grants

State grants are awarded to eligible students who are Washington residents and complete the FAFSA or WASFA application. These grants are based on available state funding. SPU cannot cover state grant amounts if loss of eligibility or funding occurs.

Eligibility: Washington residents with financial need as calculated by the FAFSA or WASFA.

Amount: Subject to state funding.

Application: FAFSA or WASFA required each year.

College Bound is a program for foster youth or eligible low-income undergraduate students who sign up for College Bound while in middle school.

Eligibility: Washington residents with financial need as calculated by the FAFSA or WASFA.

Amount: subject to state funding.

Application: FAFSA or WASFA required each year.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students who are residents of WA state and are majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or health care programs of study whose family income is at or below 125% of the Washington median family income.

Amount: Varies.

Application: WA Opportunity Scholarship Application. FAFSA is also required each year.

Institutional Grant

Institutional grants are awarded to eligible students who complete the FAFSA or WASFA application.

Eligibility: SPU Grants are awarded to undergraduates based on financial need for up to five years from first receiving the grant.
