Dunn Gift to Expand Mentoring

Students

The School of Business, Government, and Economics recently received a generous $165,000 gift from the Bob and Ruth Dunn Charitable Foundation to fund a three-year expansion of the mentor program run through the Center for Applied Learning (CAL).

The gift will finance the hiring of a mentor program coordinator, reporting to CAL Director Mark Oppenlander. This new hire will enable a substantial increase in CAL’s capacity to match undergraduate students with professional mentors.

Although housed in the SBGE, the program is open to all undergraduate SPU students. Learn more about the Mentor Program.

The charitable foundation’s namesakes moved to Seattle in 1940, when Bob joined the law firm of Bogel & Gates. Throughout his working and retired life, Bob was very active in Seattle Rotary, City Chapel, the Seattle YMCA, Boy Scouts, and University Congregational Church. He was also known for his service as a King County Councilman.

Bob was amazed by how much could be accomplished if one did not care who received the credit. He was known to recognize the positive side of every situation and the good in every person he met. He regularly made generous contributions to the organizations he was passionate about, and in gratitude for the opportunities he received in Seattle. He left a significant portion of his estate to help local organizations, including Seattle Pacific University.
